Merry Christmas

We are at the end of a long Autumn term and have spent some wel deserved time feeling festive with Christmas Challenge Cup and our final Christmas community engagements

On Tuesday, we found the time for a Geography field trip to compare land use in local woodland wit that of the Amazon rainforest. The children made use of their iPads to collect evidence and back in the classroom, we analysed their findings to draw conclusions for their comparisons.

We hope you have a lovely Christmas break.

What a fantastic couple of weeks we've had here at Polruan School! The end of term has been filled with excitement, creativity, and festive cheer.
We kicked things off with our amazing Nativity performance. The children worked so hard, and it truly showed as they brought the story of Christmas to life with enthusiasm and joy. We couldn’t be more proud of their dedication and energy—it was a performance to remember!
In addition to our Nativity, we had a fun trip to the Cinema to see Paddington 3. The children thoroughly enjoyed the movie, and it was a great way to relax and bond before the holidays. There were lots of smiles, laughs, and conversations about Paddington’s latest adventures!
One of the highlights of the season has been our lovely singing around the Christmas tree. The children’s voices filled the air with festive spirit, and we also enjoyed a heartwarming service today, marking a special end to the term. It’s always wonderful to come together as a school community, reflecting on the year gone by and celebrating the joy of the season.

Our poetry unit came to a beautiful close as the children finished writing their lovely festive poems. Their creativity and skill have really shone through in their writing, and we’ve been so impressed with their work. What great poets we have at Polruan!

In Art, we wrapped up our work thinking carefully about the word "composition" as we created our final pieces. The children have been so thoughtful in their approach to art, focusing on how to balance colors, shapes, and textures to create something special.

Our Geography unit also came to an end with a fascinating comparison between life in Shanghai and our own town of Polruan. The children have learned so much about different cultures and environments, and it was a great way to wrap up our studies for the term.

As we head into the holiday season, we want to take a moment to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
We look forward to seeing everyone back on Tuesday, January 7th for another exciting term ahead!
With best wishes
Mrs. Fernie, Mrs. Andrew, Mrs. Hicks, and Miss Talbot

Friday 6th December

This week has been another busy and exciting one at school as the children continue to work hard and have lots of fun in their lessons! Here’s a little look at what we’ve been up to:

Nativity Play Preparations.
Our young performers have been busy practicing songs and learning their lines for the upcoming Nativity Play next week. The excitement is building, and we can't wait to see all their hard work come together on stage. It's always such a magical experience, and we're sure this year’s performance will be extra special!

Maths
In Maths, we’ve just wrapped up our units on addition and subtraction. The children have really grasped these concepts and are ready to tackle our next challenge: shapes! We’re looking forward to exploring the world of geometry in the coming weeks, and the children are eager to see how shapes fit into the world around them.

English
In English, the children have been working tirelessly on their Christmas stories, inspired by the book Binny’s Diwali. They’ve been so creative, and we can’t wait to read the finished pieces! Next up, we’ll be focusing on writing Christmas poems, so get ready for some festive wordplay and holiday cheer!

Art
In Art, we’ve been experimenting with different mediums to create beautiful drawings. The children have really enjoyed exploring new techniques, and we look forward to seeing their completed Christmas compositions soon. The festive season has truly inspired some fantastic artwork!

A huge thank you to all the parents for their continued support. Have a wonderful weekend, and we look forward to another busy week ahead! Warm wishes,

Mrs Fernie, Mrs Andrews, Mrs Hicks, and Miss Talbot

Christmas Performances

Christmas Play performance is the best day of the school calendar and this year was no exception. It marks the culmination of weeks of practice, prop making, singing and confidence boosting. It is always a joy to watch the children’s enthusiasm and confidence grow over the weeks as they find themselves taking on the roles assigned and beginning to imagine how best to bring them to life. For some children, this is their favorite part of the year, a time to shine by fully embracing the opportunity showcase a different side to their personality and skill set.

Being a small school inevitably means all hands on deck as cast sizes for the plays are generally much larger than the children we have in our classes so everyone has an important role to play and often means children playing several parts or several parts being amalgamated into one large role. Through the study of the script and analysing the personalities of the different characters using reading skills, the children develop a good understanding of their part. This is further enhanced by their involvement in creating costumes, props and the staging.

As always, the performance was well attended, and the children shone. We are all incredibly proud of their performance and hope you enjoyed the shows as we did. Thank you for all the lovely messages complimenting the children on their performances.

Following on from the successful singing at the Community Christmas Lunch on Tuesday, we are two down, two to go for our community Christmas performances. We hope you can join us singing around the tree on Tuesday afternoon at 2pm on the Wharf and again for our Christmas service at Saint Saviours on Thursday morning at 9am.

Reminder that Tregeagle class has a Geography field trip Tuesday morning, our whole school trip to watch Paddington is on Wednesday and class parties on Thursday/Friday. As always, we finish the term early so pick up is at 1:30pm on Friday.

Well we are finishing the last week of November already!  What a great week we've had.

In English the Year 1 and 2's have been planning and writing some amazing stories all about Christmas.  Reception have been exploring birthday parties and using their imaginations to draw and describe some delicious birthday cakes, party guests and book characters.

In maths, Reception have been continuing to develop their number knowledge, looking at numbers 1-5.  Year 1's have been beginning to explore 2-D and 3-D shape, recapping on shape names and properties.  Year 2 have been completing their last steps in their unit of work on addition and subtraction, explaining and solving a mixture of problems.

In our RE work this week we looked at the importance of Advent at this time of year, to Christian people.  The children discovered the meaning behind an Advent wreath and had a go at making their own.

Our singing for our nativity is sounding beautiful.  The children are working so hard and we are sure you are going to be very impressed.

Next week seems to be looking pretty normal at the moment but I think it may be the last one before the Christmas craziness starts!!

If you have any questions or queries then please ask.

Autumn 2

This week has flown by in a flurry of activity. The school is bustling with creativity and enthusiasm and we are reminded how children have great capacity to turn the most mundane tasks into something enjoyable by adding a little playfulness.

Trust Football Event
On Thursday afternoon, our older children joined pupils from our other Trust schools for a football event at Callywith College. It was a wet, windy and old affair; however this did not dampen spirits nor did the very tough competition damage enthusiasm or determination. Mr Twaite was particularly proud of the progress the group made over the course of the afternoon along with their sense of camaraderie, sportsmanship and respect for each other. They showed real spirit and resilience and we are super proud of them for representing our school.

Celebrations
In Canute class, the children have been exploring how people across the world celebrate and this week they arrived at advent celebrations. They have studied how Christians count down to Christmas and made their own advent wreath to represent the 4 Sundays of advent.

Polly Swish Clothes Swap
Reminder that the village hall is hosting the Christmas Polly Swish Clothes Swap on December 15th, the children have brought home slips today advertising the event. Like last year, the school will be among the beneficiaries of this event so if you are able to pop along on Sunday 15th, please do.

Achievement Assembly

Writer of the Week:
Antonia for always pushing and challenging herself to be the best writer she can be I all our writing lessons. Her determination and efforts pay off and the whole school enjoyed listening to her poem about the River Fowey.
Mya for taking great care to use all the sounds in every word in her independent writing and taking great care with her handwriting making it a joy to read.

Star of the Week:
Tegan for her determination, support and resilience as the team captain for our footballers.
Irina for her kindness and caring nature, lending her scooter to a friend when they felt upset.

Have a lovely weekend,
Jane Wills

ART

In this week’s step in our textile unit, the children mixed acrylic paint to match their mood boards and added this to their glue covered patterned material. They used their learning of the colour wheel to mix primary colours to make secondary colours and the results were great. Aside from a few blobs of paint on the carpet, the unit of work is on course to be completed next week, when we wash out the glue to reveal the patterns created.

Christmas Play

I have sent home slips with request for costumes and props for our Christmas play. Please do not buy anything new, we are asking for the children to bring in any suitable items they already have at home. If you are struggling to find any, please let us know by Wednesday 5th and we will find/make something in school.

Singing
Mrs Butlin was very impressed with the children again this week. Their enthusiasm and desire to learn our Christmas play songs is evident for all to hear and makes it a real joy to work with them. We are encouraging the children to take their song sheets home so they can continue to practice the songs at home too.

Dancing
Mrs Phillips has been teaching the class a dance as part of the play. As always, any kind of expressive art is met with gusto and positivity from everyone. That the dance requires “attitude” is only a bonus as you can see from the photos.

Enjoy the weekend,
Mr Twaite and Mrs W

Autumn 2

Writing and Science
We are writing a biography in English about Sir David Attenborough and the children are able to draw on their learning from science to supplement their research. We are currently exploring the features of writing for required for this genre and developing a bank of useful and challenging vocabulary to apply in their independent writing. For publishing their biographies, the class have asked if they can send their completed work to David Attenborough so they have set the bar high!

ART
This week, we have been using our previous weeks’ learning to create a pattern inspired by William Morris which we will transfer to textile to try our hand at batik. Rather than using melted wax, we are substituting this with PVA glue and using acrylic paint. So far, we have some fantastic rainforest inspired patterns which will be coloured using the themes from the children’s mood boards created earlier this half term.

Personal Development
On Friday morning, we had a visit from South West Water to talk about sustainability and pollution. The children learnt ways to preserve water, found out about the effects of plastic pollution on the environment and waterways in particular and learnt how sewage is treated to help limit pollution. The children were delighted to be able to use their knowledge of the water cycle and relished informing the trainer that Earth’s water is a finite resource.

Enjoy the weekend,
Mr Twaite and Mrs W

Autumn 2

After school clubs have been well-attended this week and all staff have been very impressed with the behaviour of the children. Mrs Andrew commented how lovely it was to watch the children working together to prepare their cookies, sharing ingredients and tips and all helping with the clean up after the baking. For STEM Club on Friday lunch times, we have decided to split the group into KS1 And KS2 to better streamline to projects the children complete so for Autumn 2 it will be the turn of KS1 children and KS2 children will attend the club after Christmas in Spring 1.

A reminder that from Monday, we are changing the collection point for Canute class to the upstairs gate. This is so staff can all be in the same place and make the handover at the end of the day easier to navigate.

Thank you to those parents who order their child’s lunches on Parent Pay. This makes it significantly easier for the kitchen to manage budgets and reduce food waste and it allows you to discuss food choices with your child at home to make sure they are aware of what to expect at lunch time. If you are unsure how to pre-order, please contact Mrs Hughes and she can guide you through the process.

We are very excited that we have been able to secure a private booking at the cinema in Bodmin so we can take the entire school to watch new Paddington film. Most of us have grown up with the brilliant stories of the brown bear from Peru and thought it would be a lovely experience for staff and children to share. Permission slips to be returned to school by 25th November.

Achievement Assembly

Mathematician of the Week:
Erin for always working with concentration and focus independently or as part of a group.
Zeniah for grasping the concept of subtraction and being able to talk about it.

Star of the Week:
Tegan for her mature and caring attitude and always being ready to help others.
Jowan for always listening and being ready to learn.

Have a lovely weekend,
Jane Wills

Autumn 2

Christmas Play
We have started preparations for our Christmas play and all the children have been given a script. As always, due to our small pupil numbers, most of the children have a speaking role or several speaking roles. I am encouraging the children to take their script home and any support you may be able to give at home with practicing lines would be most welcome.

Anti-bullying Week
On Tuesday, we joined the BBC Live lesson for Anti-bullying week encouraging the children to consider how they might deal with conflicts between peers and fostering positive interactions. We complete some activities on SeeSaw so you are able to log in to see your child’s learning.

PE
A reminder that PE is now Mondays and Thursdays. We hope to have outdoor PE on Mondays so please wear joggers and jumpers, for Thursday’s sessions we will be in the village hall so shorts under joggers might be a good option. I have uploaded the new version of our timetable to SeeSaw.

Enjoy the weekend,
Mr Twaite and Mrs W

Friday 15th November

Well what another jam packed week we have had.  The children have worked so hard even through all of the sniffles, sore throats and coughs!

We started this week by discussing Remembrance and how important it is to remember what people have done in the past to help us today.  The children have completed lots of activities during their rainbow challenges this week, linked to Remembrance day.

Maths
In maths this week our Reception children have been exploring shapes, particularly focusing on circles and triangles.  They have been looking at the properties of each shape, learning the vocabulary to describe them and making pictures using them.  Year 1 and 2 have been continuing their learning in addition and subtraction.  Year 1's have spent time exploring fact families and Year 2's have been finding 10 more and 10 less using number lines, hundred squares and also mentally.

English
This week in Drawing Club, Reception have been using their imaginations to create some amazing work.  Year 1 and 2 have been writing some amazing sentences based on the story of Binny's Diwali.  There has been some great adjectives, use of speech marks and beautiful handwriting.

PE
This week we have had our second session of gymnastics which the children are getting stuck right into.  They are all able to move in lots of different ways and are beginning to create some basic gymnastic shapes with control.

PSHE
In our PSHE work this half term we are 'Celebrating difference'.  So far we have discussed the things we like to do and how these might differ from our friends and also the similarities and differences we have.

Reading buddies
On Thursday afternoon we came together with Tregeagle class to have some reading time with our reading buddies.  It was really lovely to see everyone engaged in a whole host of different texts.

We are looking forward to another fabulous week next week.  If you have any questions then please ask.

Have a great weekend.

Learning

Our first week back has been full of energy and the children's books are brimming with great examples of their learning.

I have included some examples of how our new editing stations are working, the children really enjoy the focus it gives for them to physically move to a new area in the classroom which has a different focus for them to consider .

Our new approach to guided reading is working well, with the class approaching their reading with their detective hats on to find clues and hidden meanings in  the texts.

Friday 8th November 2024

Hello everyone!

We hope you all had a fantastic half-term break! It’s wonderful to see the children back, full of energy and ready to dive into learning. This week, we kicked off our new enquiry question: “Do we all celebrate the same way?” Over the next few weeks, we’ll explore various celebrations from around the world, which is sure to be an exciting journey! Attached below is out Learning Map for you to see and overview of where we are going & what the children will be learning this half term.

To start things off, we learned about Bonfire Night. The children discovered the story of Guy Fawkes and his role in the Houses of Parliament, as well as why we continue to celebrate this event today. It was a great way to connect history with our current celebrations!

In Maths, our Reception class has begun exploring numbers up to 5, while our Year 1 and 2 students have started working on subtraction. We’re so proud of how well they’re grasping these concepts!

In English, we’ve started reading the book “Binny’s Diwali.” Over the next couple of weeks, we’ll be plotting out the story and then getting creative by changing it to reflect Christmas themes. We’re excited to incorporate all the features of a good story that we’ve learned about into our own writing!

We’ve also dipped our toes into Textiles in Design Technology, where we’re learning how to thread a needle, tie a not and the art of the running stitch. Some of us found it a bit challenging, but everyone showed great perseverance! We can’t wait to see the final outcomes next week.

As always, if you have any questions or queries, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Wishing you all a wonderful weekend ahead!

Hello Everyone!

We a really lovely week we have to end this first half term!

Maths Update
In maths this week, our Reception children have been continuing to focus on the numbers 1, 2, and 3. The children have been listening to stories and exploring the concepts of 1 more and 1 less, using the stories as a tool for number work. Meanwhile, our Year 1 and 2 children have been continuing to develop their understanding of addition and subtraction, using and recognising what the different symbols mean.

English Learning
In English, we have completed our unit of work based on recount writing.  The children used their filmed interviews with Rachel the nurse to recount their questions and the answers Rachel gave.  This took a lot of effort and everyone was determined to get all of their information onto the page.  we found out so much about Rachel and her job.

Music time
This week we had our weekly session with Mrs Butlin, but with a twist.  The children enjoyed singing the songs and rhymes with everyone giving there all.  Then we were lucky enough to all get a go at playing the flute.  Mrs Butlin is a beautiful player and the children love listening to her.  We got the chance to try and make some sounds using just the mouth piece and then put the flutes together so we could feel what it is like to hold the instruments.  It was not as easy as we all thought but we definitely have some potential flute players in Canute.

We hope you all enjoy a well deserved break over the half term holidays and we look forward to seeing you all on Monday 4th November.

Last week of Autumn 1

We have come to the end of our enquiry “Changes to Children’s Lives through times”. This week, we captured the knowledge gained from different subjects so the children can see how their learning as historians, scientists and artists have progressed. I have included some photos of the final pieces of art the children have produced at the end of our drawing unit, they have also been uploaded to their SeeSaw journals so you can admire them from home.

On Tuesday, we joined the Primary Futures team for another round of Guess My Job. The children asked some brilliant questions to try and gauge which jobs the visitor have within the Aviation Industry. This time, despite some great interrogating questions, we did not manage to guess the Air Traffic Controller and Pilot trainer, however this did not dampen any spirits. The children remembered our trip to Bodmin Airfield last year and the visit to the control tower so had some experiences to link the jobs to. As always, these meetings inspire and aspire, and we have had some god conversations around how education pathways can lead to jobs and how gender no longer act as a barrier for dream jobs.

After half term, we are moving the time table around so PE will be Mondays and Thursdays. We hope to have outdoor PE on Mondays so please wear joggers and jumpers, for Thursday’s sessions we will be in the village hall so shorts under joggers might be a good option.

I hope you have a lovely break next week. Look forward to seeing everyone back Monday 4ht November.

Thursday 24th October

We have reached the end of a busy Autumn 1 with lots of fantastic learning taking place across the school. One of the benefits of a small school with mixed classes is how well teachers know the pupils which makes the return after the long summer break much easier to tailor accurately to each child. We have seen the impact of this with children able to talk about last year’s learning to build on new learning.

After School and Lunch time Clubs

Thanks to our lovely and dedicated staff, we have some brilliant clubs running again after half term, starting the second week back so from Monday 11th November.

Monday 3:15-4pm: Games Club with Mrs Fernie and Miss Talbot. This is open to Year 1-Year 6
Wednesday 3:15-4pm: Cooking Club with Mrs Andrew. This is open to Year 3 – Year 6
Thursday 3:15 – 4pm: Art and Crafts Club with Mrs Phillips. This is open to Year 1- Year 6.
Friday lunch time: STEM Club with Mr Twaite. Building, engineering and teamwork. This is open to all.

In addition, Mrs Wills is running Hot Chocolate SATs club for Year 6 Tuesday and Thursday afternoons between 3:15-4pm.

We will send out signing up sheets after half term and remind everyone that signing up to clubs is a commitment, so we expect you to attend very week.

INSET
Reminder that tomorrow, Friday 25th October is an INSET day and pupils will not be in school.

Achievement Assembly

Autumn 1

PSHE
We are coming to the end of our first unit - Being Me - and for the past 2 weeks, we have been exploring Democracy and British Values. This week, we looked in particular at how our daily life at school is influenced by democracy and how each pupil in the class has a role to fulfil. We know that the children have lots of empathy and lots of in-depth knowledge of each but it was a real surprise to see how quickly they organised each other to fit the roles of: nurturer, organiser, problem solver, encourager and ideas people and how little disagreement this caused - what a great bunch of children they are!

LIBRARY VAN
The library van turned up Friday morning and this time it was the job of Year 6 to find the 50 books from the library to exchange. Following the selection, they had a discussion around who should visit the van as only 3 were allowed and they used their skills from PSHE to find the fair selection. So we now have a new stock of exciting library books to supplement our book band books. It was great to see the different selections chosen and how their recent and upcoming learning was reflected in this. They chose Benjamin Zephaniah stories inspired by their poetry work during Black History Month, they chose historically inspired books from the Victorian era and a selection of geographical books to support our upcoming enquiry about Rainforests. They also chose some dyslexia friendly books printed with yellow pages as they know some of their peers use coloured overlays to support reading.

PRIMARY FUTURES
We are joining the Primary Futures team on Tuesday for a STEM inspired session all about aviation. It will follow the familiar pattern of the children asking Yes/No questions following the clue provided to find out which jobs the volunteers have. We are looking forward to another brilliant morning and finding out more about jobs in aviation.

Have a lovely weekend,
Mrs W

Cooking and Show Time

Break time on Thursday was showtime. Some of the children in Tregeagle class have been preparing a show complete with ticketing and seating for the rest of the school. Thankfully the weather was perfect for the performance which went without a hitch. Another group of children will be preparing a performance for after half term. Photos attached below.

Foodbank
We finished off the week with a visit from the Foodbank. The children found out about the work the Foodbank does in helping communities and they had a chance to join in with a cooking demonstration. Thank you to the parents who joined us at the end of the day, we hope this was a useful visit and provided inspiration for cooking together at home.

Online Safety
Throughout the school year we will be working with the children to help them develop the life skills and knowledge they need to use the online world safely and with confidence. The following websites also provide helpful information about staying safe online: https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents/ how to let your child make the most of the internet while remaining safe. https://www.childnet.com/ Childnet International is a non-profit organisation working with others to help make the internet a great and safe place for children. https://www.ceop.police.uk/Safety-Centre/ If you are worried about online abuse or the way someone has been communicating online let CEOP know. If you have any questions about how to support your child in staying safe online, please don’t hesitate to contact school.

Achievement Assembly

Mathematician of the Week:
Ailla for taking responsibility or her learning and striving to do her very best – a fantastic attitude!
Kayden for going over and beyond with his learning, completing his own maths and having a go a Year 1 maths too

Star of the Week:
Toby for being kind, considerate and a model for behaviour and empathy at our school.
Leia for being extra helpful on our trip to Nancarrow farm.

We look forward to seeing you all for parent consultations Monday and Tuesday next week.
Have a lovely weekend,
Jane Wills
